Help!

  • Jul. 1st, 2009 at 3:22 PM
the last one to blossom
I am determined to do something (however small) every day in July. Give me suggestions! I need fun and easy things to do. I have one restriction: I need to be at home every weekday at 3 pm to get my sister off the bus. So I could only take long trips on weekends. I'll be posting a list of my ideas and other people's suggestions as they come in.

Rome!

abstinence doesn't work
I am in Rome from May 28th to June 28th. I'll be using this journal as my travel blog. :P

It is 7:15 am here and I have not slept all night. I hope that the coming day isn't too horrible because of it. Finally met the entire group yesterday. Michael White was not nearly as intimidating as I thought he might be. Everyone is generally very friendly, although I have not had real conversations or quality time with a few people just yet. One guy here went to Rhodes College as well and majored in the same things I am. Sweet deal.

Went to the bar Baccanale in Trastevere: http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/group.php?gid=47321290459&ref=mf and had some delicious Bailey's there. I also had quite a bit of cheap red wine at another location.

I am hoping to go grocery shopping today. Photos to coooome.

New Photos, Holidays

Put some new photos up of a German church which was rebuilt after it was bombed during WWII. I feel myself being more and more drawn to Germany, especially after Italy was such a disappointment. Too bad there's no room in my schedule for a German class. :-/

Anywaaaay.

Didn't get much of anything for Christmas. My birthday (and I guess really Christmas as well) present is the trip to Cancun from my dad and my mom got me a GPS and a couple other little things. I put the lenses on my wishlist so late that I'm sure I won't be getting any. Maaaan. I've recently gotten that itch to take pictures again. Maybe today I'll drive around and shoot. I'll have to ask my mom about some deserted wilderness-like places since I can't really think of any.

Ben comes in four days!

Devious Journal Entry

abstinence doesn't work
Hey! So this journal has been dormant for far too long. When I created it I meant it to really be an art journal and nothing more, but lately my mind has been elsewhere. Instead of refraining from posting, I'll post whatever I want. Fuck rules!

Some good news:

My photo Struggle tied for second place in a deviantart club's contest. There were only like four entries, but STILL. :P I'm just glad to be getting a visitor every day or so.

Istanbul

abstinence doesn't work
Blahhh! So between all the papers and tests, I've had no time to sit down and write here. I finally got off my ass, though, because after Friday I will not have access to the internet for a month. Baww. So let me break down my trips to Istanbul and Amsterdam for you. :D

I'm sorry, my lj-cut doesn't seem to be working! Can anyone help me out on how to do it on this new version of lj???

Let me start by saying that I paid a ridiculous amount of money to go to Istanbul. Ben and I originally deemed going an impossiblity because of the cost, but our Art History teacher kept going on and on about Santa Sophia so we broke down and bought plane tickets. We flew into an airport on the asian side of Istanbul, so we had a long ride from the airport to the Bosphorous. I hadn't realized it would be so hot there, and I was already beginning to regret not bringing any shorts. I felt really out of place in my tank top, though. Every woman I saw was wearing sleeves. I didn't know if I was being paranoid, maybe it was merely coincidence that no one else's sleeves were showing.

The  ferry ride across the river was pretty nice:

The walk to the hotel made me knees whimper. :( We stayed on a street full of hostels and restaurants, very touristy. We ate at a nice, traditional restaurant where we were scolded by the waiter for not knowing basic words in Arabic. XP We got our first cheese platter in Istanbul which we would continue to get whenever we had a chance. There was a cat at the restaurant who wouldn't stop coming to the table and begging for food. It got annoying pretty fast. I learned in my short stay in Istanbul that cats are everywhere. Seriously.

FINALLY, Santa Sophia:

Me!:

From the outside:

The Blue Mosque, which was very close to my hostel...but I never had time to go in. Overall I wish I had had more time there to do everything I wanted:

The Basilica Cistern, which was NOT worth the 10 lira it cost to get in. -_- I was slipping and sliding around since the ceiling leaks which made my knees angry.

Topkapi Palace was beautiful, although unfortunately I didn't go into the harem because it cost an extra 15 lira to get in. Rawwwr.

Me again, wishing I had sunglasses:

Eep:

One feature of the palace I don't have photos of (because photographpy wasn't allowed) is one of the many museums within the palace which supposidely holds possessions of biblical figures. They have the "staff of Moses" and the "sword of David" and all sorts of things like that which all look very synthetic and new, despite its 10th century B.C.dating. XP It was pretty hilarious that someone truly believes that the turban of John is real, especially when it appears to be created last week to the naked eye.

hated the grand bazaar. Big markets where people try to call you over to their merchandise is nothing new to me, but the merchants would get angry at you if you didn't want to buy their products. I'm sure it was all an act to make you feel guilty and push you into buying something, but it just made me uncomfortable and made me simply walk away. I wish that I could have shipped back a carpet, but I didn't even bother looking at the prices since I had so little money. :-/ I got a very tiny jewelry box, about big enough for a ring or two. I had to haggle which I'm not good at or comfortable with, but fortunately I sort of accidentally haggled by trying to leave because I honestly was not going to pay so much for such a small object.

One of my worst experiences in Istanbul happened soon after these pictures were taken:

I had been wanting some pants (the kind that Princess Jasmine wears in Aladdin :P) and I finally saw some I liked in the shop we're in above. The owner of the shop gave me the pants and told me to go upstairs and I try them on. Upstairs was really an attic/storeroom, so I felt slightly intrusive being up there. I was trying various pairs on, and when I was in my underwear the owner came up. I tried to cover myself up a bit and told him that I didn't have pants on, but he came all the way up the stairs anyway. I figured he just didn't undnerstand what I was saying. He came up and held the pants out in front of me to put my legs into. I thought that since he wasn't making me being in my underwear a big deal, I wouldn't either. Once I put the pants on, though, he groped my ass a bit. He snapped the waistband of my underwear. I told him that they were too big, and he walked behind me to look for more, and touched my ass again as he did so. I felt very naked and vulnerable, standing there in my underwear. He urged me to try on my more pants, but I told him no. The whole experience was very strange, because I didn't think something like that would happen to me without me telling the guy off. But instead I was just stunned and didn't do much of anything. I was disappointed in myself. I regretted telling him that Ben and I were not married when he asked (a question we got a lot, which was weird because I still consider myself much too young to be married. I hate growing up!). It took me awhile to get over my guilt.

Some stuff on da street:

Arthur vs. Odysseus

Soooo...I'm a little obsessed with Arthurian legend right about now.

I recently wrote a paper about how Thomas Malory's Le Morte D'Arthur compares and contrasts with the musical Camelot. My thesis (in very basic terms) was this: "Society's values have fluctuated between the 1400s and today, changing the morals which we instill in our heroes. "

Agree/disagree?

Studying in Oxford is certainly an experience. People seem to really know what they're talking about here. That seems like an obvious thing to say, but I see a real difference between my professors at Rhodes as well as tutors I had at Sewanee and in Durham.

This experience is also making me question whether I want to stick with the classical route or not. Looking at a bunch of very plain, old churches gets boring REALLY FAST. Plus they're cold. Even in August. Yet I'm truly interested in some of the art we've been studying, and certainly the literature from the Middle Ages. What's a girl to do?

Some of my photos thus far:
